Founder Spotlight: Chen-Yang Lin
Why did you start a startup?
I was motivated to start a startup because it allows me to take a strategic, big-picture view of innovation and business. Previously, I worked as an R&D product engineer at Powertech Technology Inc. (PTI), one of the top five OSAT companies globally, where I had the opportunity to report directly to Intel executives and learn from leading managers about strategic thinking. During the pursuit of my Ph.D. at Rice University in Dr. Jun Lou’s lab, I collaborated with my co-founders, Tianshu and Jing, on a novel materials technology. Seeing its potential to address critical thermal challenges in next-generation GPUs inspired me to build a startup that could drive real impact in semiconductor packaging and heat management.
Additionally, I was influenced by my parents, who ran an electric appliances retail business — witnessing their entrepreneurial spirit from an early age instilled in me a deep respect for innovation, persistence, and building something of value.
What was your first job?
My first job was an internship as a Quality Assurance Engineer at Ginar Technology Co., Ltd. after completing my undergraduate degree in chemical engineering. There, I conducted material experiments, applied quality control management to first-batch products, and prepared quality inspection reports. It was a great experience that introduced me to hands-on material testing and quality assurance, and it ultimately inspired me to pursue further studies in material science for graduate school.
What’s the most unexpected thing you’ve had to do as a founder?
The most unexpected thing I’ve had to do as a founder was standing on the MIT stage, pitching our venture as a finalist in the MIT Climate & Energy Prize. While I had long admired MIT, I never expected that one day I’d proudly represent Rice University—competing head-to-head with top teams from around the world. It was a powerful moment that showed the world Rice has just as strong an entrepreneurial spirit and innovation ecosystem. We were proud to carry that flag. Go Owls!
